1973: Start of the new project and negotiations between Mercedes -Benz Steyr and others. The first wooden model of the cross country vehicle is completed.
1974: Open canvas top vehicle with short wheel base is presented as the first prototype in metal.
1975: Feasibility study confirms demand of a cross country vehicle made by Mercedes-Benz.
1978: The Geländefahrzeug-Gesell-schaft (GHG) is acting as manufacturer.
1979: Production start on February 1st in the Graz factory with the models:
- 230 G
- 240 GD
- 280 G
- 300 GD
1980: A closed van-type vehicle with short and long wheel base is added.
1981: First face lift. An automatic transmission , air conditioning , side benches in the loading area, additional tanks , a tropical roof , gravel deflectors for the head lights , a winch , a hard - top for convertible , gun brackets , all purpose tub for the trunk , and a power take - off are available extras
1982: Injection for the 230 G and the 280 g that from now on are named 230 GE and 280GE respectively. From now on Recaro -seats , and additional heating , smaller steering wheel , wide tires on alloy wheels, and flared wheel arches are available. Instead of the (GFG) Daimler Benz now becomes the manufacturer.
1983: In the framework of the second face lift there are four new metallic paints to be chosen from and a five-speed gearbox is available. The face lift brings along revised switches and s modified seat adjustment. Furthermore there is an eight - inch tandem power brake.
1984: Modification of the 280 GE engine. The main brake cylinder on all models is increased by one inch.
1985 Discontinuation of the short van type. The third face lift with differential locks on front and rear axle as standard specification and engine revolution counter , towing coupling in the front bumper , new seat coverings ,carpeted floor mats , revision of the instrument panel as well as a central locking system , and enlarged wheel arches for tyres in the dimension of 255/75/R15 at an extra charge. Production start of a chassis -cab with a 2.85 m wheel base.
1986: Production start of the 200 GE for Italy. A regulated catalytic converter for the 230 GE. The 50 000th G is leaving the assembly line.
1987: Forth face lift with power windows, automatic antenna, luggage compartment cover, tank with higher capacity. The production of the chassis cab with a wheel base 3, 120 mm is started. The 250 GD is launched. Beginning of planning the future model range 463.
1988: The 300 GD is getting the OM 617 engine. Furthermore available arms rests for the front seats and the diesel models are equipped with a tank made of plastic material instead of steel.
1989: The special model “classic “Modifications in the diesel engines .Presentation of the model range 463 on the 1AA.
1990: Official press launch of the 463 in the Château Lastours near Perpignan. On sale are the 230 GE 300GE ,250 GD, and the 300 GD.
1991: Discontinuation of the model range 460.
1992: Market launch of the model 461. In this model range the 250 GD is replaced by a 2.9 litre suction diesel engine. In the model range 463 the 350 GD and 300 GD discontinued. In the framework of the first face lift, a cruise control, spare wheel cover .and burr walnut for the interior are available. The 100,000th G -Class is produced.
1993: Model range 461 with chassis cab (wheel base 3.4 m) presentation of the Special 500 GE. The model designations for the model range 463 are changed.
1994: Second face lift in the model range 463. The G 320is substituting the G 300.
1995: The front disc brakes in the model range 463 are now ventilated. All 463 models receive an infra-red central locking system with remote control and electronic immobilizer.
1996: On the International Off -Road Shows Mercedes Benz is presenting the G -convertible with an electro hydraulically operated soft top and the G 300 Turbo diesel. The third face lift is bringing along the headlamp cleaning system, the front passenger air bag, an aspherical rear view mirror on the driver’s side and the cruise control for the diesel as standard features.
1997: The model range 461 was only available as a 290 GD. On the A11 in Frankfurt the 461 model is enhanced by optionals such as power windows and a cruise control. In the model range 463 the V6 engine in the G320 is replacing the 6-cylinder in line engine. The electronically controlled five -speed automatic transmission is now available both for the G320 and the G300 Turbo diesel.
1998: The 290 GD Turbo diesel is substituting the 290 GD with a suction diesel engine. In the model range 461 air conditioning and four speed automatic transmissions are available. The 463 models are getting their face lift. Presentation of the G 500.
1999: Press presentation of the special model G500 Classis in Graz. All 463 models are equipped with the multifunction steering wheel.
2000: The G 400 CDI is replacing the G300 DT.
2001: The G 270 CDI with its five cylinder in-line engine is extending the model platform.
2002: Discontinuation of the model range 461. The model range 463 is further enhanced by new extras. The G for the first time is available officially in the US.
2003: The G55 AMG is becoming the new top model. There were automatically dipping outside rear view mirrors.
2004: The G 55 AMG with supercharged engine and the special “Limited Edition “ respectively “Classic 25” is presented. In the framework of another face lift the long station wagon gets window bags and all get further improvements.
